Rebuilding the Economy by Changing the Way the World Views Cleaning

An Industry United

In light of the current impact of COVID-19, ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association and ISSA Show North America are rallying to empower the cleaning industry to truly change the way the world views cleaning.

ISSA,The Worldwide Cleaning Industry Association
The Time Is Here: How Will the Industry Step Up?

ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association, is working to serve its members and leverage the industry’s collective voice in these challenging times. In

March, ISSA Executive Director John Barrett had the distinct honor to represent ISSA on a White House Communications Call with President Donald Trump, who called upon executives from industrial supply retailers and wholesalers regarding the national response to COVID-19. The President thanked them for providing the goods Americans rely on every day and expressed his gratitude to the incredible employees who are working tirelessly to that end.

Trump and members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force discussed how the administration's lifting of federal restrictions on the trucking industry allows maximum efficiency throughout the distribution network. Further, they discussed how continued cooperation and coordination between the private sector and all levels of government is essential to mitigate the effects of this pandemic.

Barrett was encouraged by the call and is pleased that the commercial and institutional cleaning industry is viewed as essential first responders in this time of need. ISSA commends its members for their efforts to flatten the curve in their respective businesses and encourage them to continue to meet the needs of those they serve however they can.

Further, ISSA is dedicated to helping cleaning industry professionals understand how to properly clean and safely disinfect for the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). Visit the association’s coronavirus resource page to access regularly updated information such as downloadable tip sheets, online training, webinars, government updates and additional business resources for the industry.

Combating COVID-19 at Trade Show and Event Facilities with ISSA’s GBAC STAR Program
Accreditation will assure visitors your building is clean and healthy.

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, The Global Biorisk Advisory Council® (GBAC), a Division of ISSA, unveiled its GBAC STAR™ Facility Accreditation Program on
cleaning, disinfection and infectious disease prevention.

The GBAC STAR program is the industry’s only outbreak prevention, response and recovery accreditation. The program establishes requirements to assist facilities with work practices, protocols, procedures, and systems to control risks associated with infectious agents, such as SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19.
The performance-based GBAC STAR program enables facilities to create and maintain an effective cleaning, disinfection, and infectious disease prevention program.

Ideal for facilities like offices, restaurants, hotels, airports, convention centers, stadiums, and other public venues of all sizes, the GBAC STAR program assesses a facility’s preparedness and provides staff with training for biorisk prevention and containment. The program also establishes a framework for communication and awareness best practices.

Public facilities seeking to improve their operating procedures related to sanitation and infection control will now have the opportunity to earn a “seal of approval” from The Global Biorisk Advisory Council® (GBAC), a Division of ISSA. The GBAC STAR seal will signal to the public that a facility has met GBAC’s rigorous requirements for maintaining a clean environment and mitigating biological risks.

“GBAC STAR is the gold standard of safe facilities, providing third-party validation that ensures facilities implement strict protocols for biorisk situations,” said GBAC Executive Director Patricia Olinger. “Accreditation empowers facility owners and managers to assure workers, customers, and key stakeholders that they have proven systems in place to deliver clean and healthy environments that are safe for business.”

GBAC Accreditation Prepares Facilities to Reopen Confidently

As facilities such as restaurants and shopping malls prepare to reopen—and others such as hotels and airports prepare for heavier traffic—facility managers are tasked with maintaining clean, hygienic buildings that inspire customer confidence. Despite the quality of products and services offered, many consumers emerging from their COVID-19 stay-at-home orders will not give their business to a company if its building does not meet strict cleanliness standards.

Survival of many of these businesses will depend on the skill of their cleaning teams, according to Forbes. Research by SEMrush, a data and trends tracking company, showed that Google inquiries seeking to learn “Is it safe to fly” increased by 3,693% from pre-pandemic to during the pandemic. Similarly, searches for “Are hotels safe?” rose 21,900%.

Facility managers are looking for ways to boost custodians’ cleaning skills and ensure worker safety, with many focusing on training. The Global Biorisk Advisory Council® (GBAC), a Division of ISSA’s GBAC STAR facility accreditation program on cleaning, disinfection, and infectious disease prevention is a key component to driving the successful revival of the economy.

Convention Centers Announce Commitment to GBAC STAR Accreditation

Chicago’s McCormick Place—the host of ISSA Show North America 2020—along with the Las Vegas Convention Center, the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas, the Georgia World Congress Center Authority (GWCCA) and many others have announced plans to pursue GBAC STAR accreditation.

GBAC STAR to earn accreditation, these leading convention centers must demonstrate compliance with GBAC STAR’s 20 elements, which range from standard operating procedures and risk assessment strategies to personal protective equipment and emergency preparedness and response measures.

“Since the onset of this pandemic we have been committed to ensuring our facilities are safe for the return of our customers, show attendees, and team members,” said Frank Poe, GWCCA executive director. “Working with GBAC to achieve GBAC STAR accreditation will ensure the highest cleaning and disinfection protocols are being implemented at GWCC and Savannah. We would expect nothing less of ourselves and for our facilities.”

  • In addition to many of the largest convention centers in the country, these leading organizations have already committed to achieve GBAC STAR accreditation in their facilities: Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, home to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins
  • Lincoln Financial Field, home to the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles
  • Staples Center in Los Angeles, home to the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers, the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and the WNBA’s Los Angeles SparksHyatt Hotels & Resorts
  • The Leading Hotels of the World, Ltd., which represents more than 400 hotels in over 80 countries VisitDallas, the Dallas Tourism Public Improvement District, Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas and Dallas city-owned arts and cultural institutions
  • Christ Fellowship Christian Church and its locations throughout South Florida.

Additionally, these prominent industry organizations are among the first to commit their support for GBAC STAR with their thousands of constituents:

  • International Association of Venue Managers and its 7,000 member facilities globally
  • International Facility Management Association and its 23,000 members worldwide
  • Global Market Development Center, the premier global trade association for the retail industry, and its 400-plus members

  • Society of Independent Show Organizers (SISO) and its more than 195 members that produce over 3,500 events globally.

Accreditation Criteria and Process

To achieve GBAC STAR accreditation, facilities must demonstrate compliance with the program’s 20 elements, which range from standard operating procedures and risk assessment strategies to personal protective equipment and emergency preparedness and response measures.

Facilities will apply online and provide all documentation and supporting evidence with their application. The GBAC STAR Accreditation Council determines the status of all GBAC STAR facilities.

“In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the GBAC STAR accreditation program is exactly what facilities need to confidently reopen and keep staff, customers, and communities safe,” said ISSA Executive Director John Barrett. “The way the world views cleaning has changed overnight. To effectively recover from this crisis and prepare for the next, it’s essential that businesses take these necessary steps—and we’re thrilled to have a stable of top organizations that have already committed to the program.”

Innovation Awards Program Call for Submissions Opens

CHICAGO — April 22, 2020 — The Innovation Awards Program returns to ISSA Show North America! Now in its 11th year, the Innovation Awards Program showcases new solutions to challenges faced by industry professionals and provides a pivotal platform for exhibitors to launch their
products or service innovations.

The Innovation Awards Program Call for Submissions is now open to all exhibitors participating in ISSA Show North America 2020. You can easily submit your innovative product or service online by visiting the Innovation Awards Program Page.

The program recognizes the cleaning industry’s most revolutionary products and services as voted on by cleaning-industry distributors, building service contractors, in-house service providers, and residential cleaners.

“Innovation is the driving force behind progress,” stated Kim Althoff, ISSA Vice President of Sales, Trade Shows, and Publications. “In the most tangible terms, ISSA Show North America is helping to fulfill our mission of ‘advancing clean and driving innovation’ with this program, through which we support and recognize the latest in products and services our members are bringing to market.”

How the Program Works
Entries are organized into five categories—Cleaning Agents; Dispensers; Equipment; Services and Technology; and Supplies and Accessories—each vying for the Innovation Category Awards and, ultimately, the Innovation of the Year Award.

Cleaning-industry distributors, building service contractors, residential cleaning contractors, in-house service providers, and wholesalers vote on the entries online in the months leading up to the show. Online voting will kick off July 13 and closes October 23.

Voters may only cast one vote per product category and all votes submitted will determine the five category winners.

After online voting concludes, a panel of industry experts serve as the official judges who will evaluate the entries using an extensive set of criteria. A weighted scale combines the online votes, onsite votes, and the judges’ ballots to determine the 2020 Innovation of the Year Award Winner.

All Innovation Awards Program entrants must be a participating exhibitor at ISSA Show North America 2020 in Chicago. The entries themselves will be on display in the Innovation Showcase, Booth 4206, throughout the exhibit days, October 27-29.

Entering the Program
To enter, please select one of the two packages:  Standard or Premium. Details for the packages can be found on the Innovation Awards Program Page. All entries will receive a promotional Innovation Success Kit, placement on the Innovation Awards voting webpage, product placement within the Innovation Showcase, Booth 4206, and more!

ISSA Show North America provides extensive marketing and public relations support for all product entrants participating in the Innovation Awards Program.

Premium entries will benefit from added visibility and promotional opportunities, including a professional in-booth interview, the ability to demonstrate the product in a 15- to 30-minute live demonstration or conduct a presentation in the Innovation Theater, Booth 5008.

After a submission is entered, ISSA Show North America will provide the tools needed to complete the upload process to the official Innovation voting page.

Milestone Dates
The deadline for entries is July 20.

Participants will have ample time to review all entry listings prior to the launch of voting. Online voting for the Innovation Category Awards launches July 31 and closes October 23—just three days before the opening of ISSA Show North America 2020.

The Category Award Winners will be announced during the Lunch & Learn in the Vista Ballroom, October 26, at 11:45 A.M. at McCormick Place. The 2020 Innovation of the Year Award Winner will be announced during the Innovation Award Ceremony in the Innovation Showcase, Booth 4206 from 1:00 P.M. to 1:30 P.M. “Frontline cleaning workers are essential first responders to the novel coronavirus and other infectious agents,” said ISSA Executive Director John Barrett. “These heroes are working courageously to slow the spread of the virus, but they need proper training and applied understanding of best practices to protect themselves and the facilities they serve. The GBAC Fundamentals Online Course fills this void and empowers cleaning professionals to work safely and effectively.”

GBAC’s online course features video presentations from Patty Olinger, GBAC Executive Director, and Dr. Gavin Macgregor-Skinner, GBAC board member and assistant professor for Penn State’s Department of Public Health Sciences. The interactive workshop includes information on the origin, symptoms, and treatment of COVID-19 as well as information useful for those responsible for cleaning and disinfecting areas that may be contaminated with the coronavirus. Upon completion, participants will be armed with the knowledge needed to respond to and recover from biohazards in the workplace.

ISSA’s GBAC Fundamentals Online Course can be accessed at www.issa.com/gbac-fundamentals. The course is US$150 for ISSA members and $300 for nonmembers. In addition to the online training, participants also receive access to GBAC’s webinar and a downloadable GBAC Forensic Restoration Guide. ISSA Show North America 2019 Flourishes in Las Vegas

NORTHBROOK, Ill., USA—December 17, 2019ISSA Show North America 2019, hosted November 18-21 in Las Vegas, was a huge success by all accounts. The cleaning industry's premier event brought together 16,215 registered cleaning-industry professionals from 75 countries for an outstanding week of networking, education, and innovation at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

This year's show witnessed a surge in attendance; it attracted 16% more registered attendees than the 2018 edition hosted in Dallas and grew slightly over the most recent and highly successful edition in Las Vegas in 2017. Of this year's 652 exhibitors, 97 were newcomers to the event. Further, 58% of registered attendees were new to the annual trade show and conference presented by ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association, and Informa Markets.

"We're extremely pleased that the show's return to Las Vegas brought with it a lot of excitement and increased attendance and engagement," said ISSA Executive Director John Barrett. "Exhibitors were energized about showcasing new solutions and attendees once again had the opportunity to learn about the latest advances in the cleaning industry, network, and further develop their skills at the 100-plus education sessions throughout the week. We truly believe this year's show was among the best we've produced."

Industry Catalyst

ISSA Show North America 2019 convened the entire cleaning and facility services industry under one roof. For the 10th consecutive year, the show hosted co-location partner the Building Service Contractors Association International (BSCAI) and its 2019 Contracting Success Conference. Additionally, ISSA welcomed the Healthy
Schools Campaign and its Green Clean Schools education track, the Restoration Industry Association's Technical Fire Restoration Summit, the International Facility Management Association, Green Sports Alliance, leading distributor sales and marketing groups, and other industry organizations and their constituents at this year's show.

BSCAI saw similar success this year with its co-located event. "BSCAI was thrilled with the growth of our Contracting Success Conference this year," said Todd Hopkins, CBSE, president and CEO of Office Pride Commercial Cleaning Services and 2019 BSCAI Convention Chairman.  "Las Vegas has typically been a successful location for our events, but this year's attendance and engagement exceeded our expectations."

Show Attractions Shine

ISSA Show North America 2019 featured several new attractions on the show floor, which proved to be popular with attendees and exhibitors alike. Highlights included the Solve for X area, which convened attendees to collaborate on their business challenges in an interactive setting; the Specialty Cleaning Area and Theater, which offered unique exhibitors education sessions for health care, residential, and restoration cleaning professionals; the International Pavilion and Italian Pavilion, which
featured exhibitors from more than 26 countries; and the First-time Exhibitor Area and Startup Village, where many of the show's 97 new exhibitors from commercial cleaning and adjacent markets like safety, industrial, and software and technology displayed their products and services.

"We made a significant investment in expanding the education and specialty-market opportunities on the show floor this year based on attendee and exhibitor feedback," said Kim Althoff, vice president of trade shows, sales, and media at ISSA. "We were encouraged to see how well these new areas were received and look
forward to building on them in the future to ensure the event remains highly relevant and impactful for our growing and evolving audience."

Further, the event's 100-plus education sessions provided something for everyone with curated tracks for distributors, building service contractors, in-house service providers, and residential cleaning professionals.
